Simple Bullet Journal Setup + Quick Tour and Sketch + Benefits of Keeping One
Happy Color Snack Sunday, sweet friends!
Today, I wanted to share with you how I’ve set up my simple bullet journal and planner for the new year. My previous bullet journal, where I do all my rough sketches for client work and projects, just came to an end so I wanted to start a new one.
I’ve heard many people say that it’s hard to get started with a bullet journal, and I used to think that too! But I have found my own way of keeping it. I like starting out with a few key pages in mind but then let the rest of them be free game for whatever projects come into my life.
The result is a quasi organized planner with *some* structure, but not too much and only as involved as I want it to be.
Watch the video to see my setup and a quick sketch of a page layout at the end! And after the video, check out a few benefits on why you should keep a written planner/journal/.
Have an art day & happy sketching!

Benefits of Keeping a Bullet Journal or Planner
- Keep track of long term goals. One of the key habits I want to adopt this year is a regular workout session. I don’t want to beat myself up for skipping a day, or a week. I just want to do more of it, on a monthly basis. So pretty much the only tracker I have set up for myself is the one for working out. What matters and what can be motivating is the visual reference of seeing your little x’s or checks add up.
- It can be organized and setup however you want. There’s lots of page layouts you can refer to and get ideas but you can also keep it super simple and just set up the minimum.
- De-clutter your brain. It’s a great place to dump all your ideas or even negative thoughts out onto a page, as opposed to keeping up with them in your head. It can help bring some clarity to your life.
- Writing has psychological benefits. There have been tons of studies that basically say that writing by hand activates a different part of your brain and has numerous advantages. It’s a better way of processing stress, trauma, etc. Here’s a list of more benefits with science backed links.
I can seriously attest to my overall peace of mind having all my thoughts and mind garbage out on a page as opposed to in my head. I highly recommend that you give it a try. And who knows, maybe after writing out some stuff you’ll end up adding doodles and before you know it, you’ll painting and feeling creative again. It’s so possible and it’s so within your reach!!
I hope you give this a try, and if you do, share it & tag me @colorsnack on Instagram so I can admire your work!
